One o the reasons | moved to Chicago in
2003 was how deeply | was impressed by the
mix of art and activism | saw during the

events held in opposition to the TransAtlantic

Business Dialogue (TABD) meeting that was ke wie e to dre’’
held there the previous year.

One of the groups that most impressed me prints the journal Lumpen. At
that time they had a loft in Wicker Park called the Buddy Space. There was
a TransAtlantic Booty Dancing Party there after the last day of actions
against the TABD. There was paper covering the walls so people could
paint, letter set presses printing posters for another protest the next month,
music, pinatas of a cop and a capitalist and films being shown outdoors on
the roof! After a couple of years in the dry atmosphere of washed up
caricatures of Leninism and anarchism that Ohio had to offer, this was real
breath of fresh air and | was sold! When | moved to town | started reading
Lumpen, and volunteering at the Autonomous Zone Infoshop in the nearby
barrio Bucktown, another space that emphasized art and activism.

About that time | became interested in the Youth
. International Party (Yippies) and read their
co-founder Abbie Hoffman's autobiography, *Soon
to Be a Major Motion Picture.” | felt like there
"As‘ were a lot of parallels between what they were
MOWBAGR  doing in Manhattan's Lower East Side in the
AL 19605 and what we were trying to do in Chicago.
While reading this book | became familiar with
another organization Hoffman simply called “The
Motherfuckers,” who | went o to read about many
times over the years under a couple other names
such as The Family and Up Against The Wall
Motherfucker.
It seemed like they were something different to
everyone: a gang, a street gang with an analysis
an affinity group, a collective in Students for a
. .o, Democratic Society. |also started to see some
stories about the proceeding group Black Mask.

Having read a fair amourt
about these organizations,
most recently the memoir
section of *Up Against the
Wall Motherf**ker: A
Memoir of the Sixties with
Notes for Next Time* by
Osha Neumann, I highly
recommend this book to
those interested in art and
activism in general, and the
New Left and 1960s in
particular. ,

The Mexican-US border is arguably a low intensity war zone. | don't

use the term lightly, nor for dramatic effect. 182 people have died

on the Arizonan border with Mexico from Oct. 2010 through Sept.
2011, and deportations of undocumented people hit record highs.

under Pres. Obama for three consecutive years with 387,790 in

fiscal 2009; 392,000 in fiscal 2010, and yet another year of

escalated deportations nearly reached 400,000 this fiscal year .

Deaths' Alternative Spring
Break. | volunteered for their
desert relief project, making
water and food drops on the
trails used by people walking
from Mexico to the US.

Last time 1 was in Phoenix on my way here in Oclober. peaple were talking ahout
doing water drops in the area as people have heen forced fo start walking that far
north from Mexico. 100 or so miles as the crow fliss, but anvona who has dene a1y
serious desert hiking can tall you. vou'll raraly walk far in 2 straight line. | think
all this shows that stricter border enforcement hasn't secured the border. bt it
has forced people into extreme situations that has resulted in deaths, ranes, and
other horrific situations that could be avoided by changes in US horder ol
